ESTUARIES and COASTS
Volume 29, Number 6A, December 2006

On The Cover

On the cover of this special issue of Estuaries and Coasts on hurricane impacts on coastal ecosystems is a small portion of the east coast of Florida, including the southern end of the Indian River Lagoon, St. Lucie inlet, and the St. Lucie estuary. The barrier island on the upper right of the image is Hutchinson Island where Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne had almost identical landfalls within a 3- week period in September 2004, providing a rare opportunity to examine the effects of repeated hurricane impacts on coastal ecosystem responses. There are several studies in this issue that focus attention on the effects of sequential hurricanes near the area shown on the cover, including Sallenger et al. (p. 880- 888) on coastal geomorphology and erosion, Steward et al. (p. 954-965) on hydrology, water quality and seagrass, Lapointe et al. (p. 966-971) on invasive algae, Switzer et al. (p. 1011-1018) on nekton, and Paperno et al. (p. 1004- 1010) on . sh communities. The image was redrawn from Figure 1 in Switzer et al. (p. 1012). The scale is 1:90,000 on the cover.
