Copyright laws such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act attempt to balance the interests of those individuals or parties that create and distribute written materials with the interests of the public in having access to those materials. Papers published in ESTUARIES and COASTS and distributed in print and online are submitted by authors whose intent is to have their research findings distributed as widely as possible. In order to ensure the highest quality of those papers and to facilitate their broad dissemination, the Estuarine Research Federation publishes ESTUARIES and COASTS with the financial support of its members and by institutional subscriptions to ESTUARIES and COASTS. We expect authors to transfer their copyright to the Estuarine Research Federation prior to publication of articles so that we can provide as wide a dissemination of those results as possible and for as long as possible.

For those individuals or parties wanting to reprint or distribute in print or electronically any material originally published in ESTUARIES and COASTS,ESTUARIES or CHESAPEAKE SCIENCE, permission must be obtained in writing from the office of the Managing Editor of ESTUARIES and COASTS. In most cases, non-profit organizations wishing to reprint parts of an article are granted permission to do so without charge. When for-profit organizations request permission to reprint articles, a copyright fee is assessed that is based in part on the number of figures, tables, or text sections that are to be reprinted. We allow links to articles published in ESTUARIES and COASTS to be posted on other internet servers without permission, but we do not allow for the copying of the electronic files on other servers without written permission from the office of the Managing Editor.
